Structure Basics – Making Things Look 3D

Start by practicing cylinders and boxes of the things around you. Here you’re using observation and what you know about structure to draw the forms. Then move on to drawing them from your imagination. Can you imagine a box in your mind and draw it exactly how you imagined it?

When you’re ready, get some reference of animals and try to simplify them into balls, cylinders, and boxes. Avoid flat angles. Try to find dynamic angles of the animals in motion. That will be a much more valuable exercise.

Post your work and participate.

Hey Guys, here are some of my attempts at this structure exercise. I probably could have simplified a bit more on these. Any critiques are appreciated!

Nice studies! - The body of an animal is symmetrical; the left leg for example, is a mirror image of the right leg. If you look at your drawing of the fox for example, and compare the two hind legs, notice how you have given them different volumes --> the legs aren't mirroring eachother. Its left leg is thicker than its right leg, for example. A similar thing happens in the other drawings. Suggested assignment: Make adjustments to your drawings, on a new layer and try to improve the symmetry of the bodies; so that the forms on each side mirror eachother. Keep in mind that this doesn't necessarily mean that the forms have the exact mirrored graphic shape. As a form rotates, the graphic shape changes. - What's your art goal? Knowing this might help me guide you better :) Please mention any artists who do the type of work that you want to create yourself! I hope this helps :) Keep up the good work!

Attempt 1. I feel I may have gone too geometric. Critique very welcome!

As an abstract drawing I actually find this phenomenal. I love what you did with the head and mouth. In the context of the lesson, I think you're spot on with your self assessment. On your next go, think about how each piece inserts into the main form of the body. There are some connections in your drawing that look a bit out of place to me, the neck being the main one. I see it as being more centered on the torso in the reference image. And it does feel stiff, so try to incorporate a bit more gestural curve into some of those lines and that will help give your drawing more life. Again though, this is a really groovy drawing. Keep up the good work!

Had a lot of fun with this assignment! Made a little rotating cube animation as a fun little precursor as I was having some trouble grasping drawing cubes in perspective.

Here are my animals! I used quite a lot of organic shapes (elongated spheres, sausages, tapered cylinders, cones, boxy shapes) - maybe I should have simplified the shapes of the animals into more geometric shapes i.e. spheres, cylinders and boxes?

I think you are on the right track. Perhaps you could simplify the forms further into geometric shapes. However, I think you have done an excellent job conveying the message of each image. The goal is to present an idea, in this case the idea of an animal. Each one is distinct and can be easily discerned as to what kind of animal they are. That was the big takeaway for me.

These are beautiful! So well structured and you've maintained the gesture throughout the forms. Awesome work!

Cool! Looking great! -What's your art goal? Feel free to share a few works of art by artists that you admire. Make sure its not just any work that you like, but specifically the type of work that you would like to create yourself. Cheers!

Hi @gog, nice studies! - It would be great to hear what your goals are? What type of work do you want to create? If you have the time, feel free to share a few works of art by artists that you admire. And not just any artwork that you like, but artworks that are the type that you want to create yourself. - I think one thing that holds you back is proportion. Your simplification of the objects and animals are quite nice, but since they are out of proportion they loose some power. Try this exercise: Do another simplification, of an animal for example. When you're done, compare your drawing to the reference again and adjust the shapes that you've drawn to match the reference even better. Feel free to tag me (@Jesper Axelsson ), if you want me to take a look. Please post the reference as well when you submit this for critique. I hope this helps :) Keep up the good work!

This excercise definitely took a long time. I found that the less dynamic the pose, the harder it was to make them look 3D. After looking at LOTS of examples, getting the gesture down and many more attempts at the drawings here, here they are! I have also gotten good practice drawing cubes and cylinders by themselves, although applying them to organic forms is a very hard task. Want to revisit this task later on as well. Critique much welcomed :)

try to redo the assignment after relearning the course about gesture n the bean. Been studying in the basic course for a while. Try to see my improvement but I still find myself confused in simplifying the form in some animals like the horse the panther n the cat in certain pose like the first pic top one. I guess it’s because things re getting forshortened? Forms are hidden? Any advice are very much welcome

Here's my homework! I did a pokemon instead of an animal, it was more fun to me. I feel like something is off with the perspective of the nose, but I don't know what?

Hi @Kevin C, nice drawings! The boxes and cylinders look pretty good, and I think you did a good job simplifying the animals😎👍 - I would recommend considering the ground plane as well. This will anchor the animals more, and it will help you with placing the feet. - The boxes and cylinders could be even stronger, so keep playing with them. BOXES Most of the time the edges are converging, but in the paws of the lion, the edges of the boxes are diverging. Try drawing some more single boxes. Draw through (lightly), as if they were made out of glass, for an extra level of structure control (and challenge 😎) and try to make the convergence even better. You could extend your lines beyond the boarders of your box, with a ruler, as a way to check if the edges seem to go to the same point. Only extending them a little bit, not all the way to the vanishing point, is often enough to spot errors. I would also encourage you to do some more drawings where you play with placing the primitives in the same space, as in the top left of image 1. Add a ground plane. Keep in mind what edges are parallel. If they are rotated back in space, then they should share vanishing point. Think of which planes are level to the ground, and if you have two boxes rotated the same way, only with different placement in the space, they will share vanishing points. CYLINDERS I attached two slides with cylinder tips. You get most things right, but the shape and openness of the ellipses could be improved on sometimes. I hope this helps :)
